A satisfying half-day walk taking in both Fewston and Swinsty reservoirs in the Washburn Valley, linked by a wooded causeway and easy lakeside paths suitable for the whole family.
Fewston and Swinsty Reservoir Loop
The Washburn Valley's twin reservoirs make a natural pairing, and this 10.3 km circuit visits both without any significant climbing. The route is ideal for a relaxed morning or afternoon with the family, the dog, or anyone who wants a proper walk without needing to earn it through steep gradients.
Starting from Swinsty Moor Car Park, the route first heads anticlockwise around Fewston Reservoir, passing through riverside alder woodland and open grass banks with views across the still water. The old stone dam embankment is a photogenic spot, particularly when mist sits low on the water in the early morning.
A wooded causeway connects the two reservoirs - a narrow strip of mature conifers and broadleaf trees that feels almost tunnel-like in summer. It is a good spot for woodland birds: nuthatch, treecreeper and great spotted woodpecker are all regulars here.
Swinsty Reservoir was completed in 1876, four years before Fewston, and has a slightly wilder feel with its mixed woodland fringe and exposed rock outcrops on the eastern shore. The return leg traces the northern shore of Swinsty back to the car park.
The loop is largely flat with only gentle rises where paths climb slightly above the waterline.
